Building international connections has proved to be essential for artists and cultural practitioners active in conflict and crisis contexts. From informal networks to more institutionalized infrastructures, these initiatives contribute to the robustness of cultural sectors and local communities, the circulation of ideas and art forms, and play an active role in peacebuilding.

For the European cultural sector, there are lessons to be learned from these connection practices, both from those in active conflicts (like in Ukraine and the Middle East) as well as in post-conflict situations (like the Yugoslav Wars). This is not only to prepare our "emergency bag" but also to help prevent potential conflicts and to contribute to facing the multiple crises in our societies.

But this also means we should honestly question the limits and necessary improvements in our support for non-EU based colleagues in conflict and crisis contexts.
